“I bought a condo – my first property – back in September 2005, at the height of the real estate hysteria. I was advised to get into the market before it was “too late”. Being new to the whole shady and shifty world of real estate, I really didn’t know what I was doing, so shame on me. It didn’t help that my unscrupulous mortgage broker changed the terms of my loan the night before I was to close and at that point I could not back out of the deal and lose $10K being held in escrow. Needless to say, right from the start my bold foray into being a homeowner was an unsettling experience.
Fast forward 3 years and about $15K in renovations and my little 650 sq ft place was nearly $100K underwater as the economy and market tanked.
